Sharpe Observation

Sam Sharpe

I'd rather die on yonder gallows...

Today marks the very first "Sam Sharpe Day" being observed in Jamaica. On December 25th 1831, "Daddy" Sharpe refused to work without pay and demanded "half the going wage rate". I think we should celebrate Sam Sharpe's legacy properly by remembering what he started on December 25th instead of commemorating the effects of Sharpe's stance on December 27th.

Known by names such as the "Christmas Rebellion," the lasting impact of Sam Sharpe's actions I hope will continue to be an important point of reflection for us all.
